MILITOPIA

After ten years of work–not constant work, mind you, but work–MILITOPIA is finally here. May 20th.

The core premise: a completely military society. Every man, woman, and child is in uniform. There are no civilians. Everyone serves.

The original idea goes back a further ten years, when I was stuck in a traffic jam and turned on the radio. They were talking about a movie, and they called Sparta a “military society”. The political scientist in me argued back at the radio: that’s not entirely accurate.

The Brussels Review Features My Short Fiction

I am thrilled by the news that the Spring 2026 Edition of The Brussels Review is alive. It features two (2) short stories of mine.

“A Child’s Christmas in Ohio” is set in the early 1970s.

President Nixon bombed Hanoi for Christmas when I was eleven years old.

How’s that for a first line grabber? I don’t want to give too much away. It’s not about war, but it is about the profound truths we sometimes face in childhood.

“Gracie” is a short study of the struggle to communicate under the weight of grief.

Please support The Brussels Review by purchasing a copy or two. Creativity must be nurtured by us all.

Cincinnati Comic Expo 2025

We’re all set up for the first day of Cincinnati Comic Expo 2025, which is tomorrow, Saturday and Sunday. We’ve brought copies of all ten (10) Dragon Street Press (DSP) titles. That includes Heart Master, of course, and we have Nik Everhart in the booth all weekend. We also have both of Amber Boudreau’s Dragoneer books. And I’m sure you are not surprised to learn that we have all three of the Grab Bag anthologies available. I have stories in each of them. Heck, we even have copies of Vampire Love Goddess by Sondra Sondheim and The Great Gatsby: Stupid Mocking Illustrated Edition. And more!!!

Stop by, Say Hi, and Buy Buy Buy !!!

I Grabbed a Spot in Grab Bag #2

My newest short story is titled “The Groundhog’s Shadow” and in case you were wondering–and I understand this–it does indeed prominently feature a groundhog in the plot. Oh no, not some window-dressing groundhog, but a central character.

There are of course stories from other writers in Grab Bag, and some pretty darn good ones, I think, including a creepy little dog, alien abduction, hero-types, villain-types, and a dragon with very peculiar hoarding instincts. Check it out.
